When Should You Remove a Tree? 5 Signs to Look Out For

Trees are a beautiful and essential part of any property — they provide shade, character, and even increase property value. But sometimes, a tree can become more of a hazard than an asset. Knowing when it’s time to remove a tree can save you thousands in damage and give you peace of mind when the next big storm rolls in. Here are five signs it might be time to call in the professionals.

1. Visible Decay or Rot

If your tree has soft, crumbling wood, deep cavities, or mushrooms growing from the trunk or base, it could be a sign of internal decay. Trees don’t heal like humans, once rot sets in, it tends to spread. A decaying tree can become structurally unstable and pose a serious risk to your home or anyone nearby.

2. Large Dead Branches

Dead or hanging branches — especially in the upper canopy — can fall unexpectedly. This is not only a safety risk but often a sign the tree is struggling or dying. If more than 50% of the tree’s canopy is dead, it’s usually safer and more cost-effective to remove it.

3. Leaning or Unstable Trunk

A tree that leans suddenly, or more than 15 degrees from vertical, may have root damage or structural issues below the surface. While some trees naturally lean, a noticeable shift over time can mean the roots are failing, making the tree more likely to fall.

4. Root Damage or Uplift

Construction work, erosion, or disease can damage the root system, leaving the tree vulnerable to collapse. Signs of trouble include visible roots breaking the surface, cracked soil around the base, or trees that have started lifting up on one side.

5. Insect Infestation or Fungal Growth

A heavy infestation of borers, termites, or other pests can weaken a tree from the inside out. Likewise, fungus growing on the bark or around the roots often signals rot or decay. These issues can be managed early, but if left too long, tree removal may be your best option.

Don’t Wait for a Storm

Tree removal isn’t just about clearing space — it’s about safety. If you’ve spotted any of these warning signs, it’s best to get a professional assessment before wind, rain, or time makes the problem worse.
